Day 3 Vancouver to Kamloops

Bags out 5:30. On bus at 7:00 to Rocky Mountaineer train. On board 7:30 after welcome from bagpiper. Slow start through Vancouver suburbs. Then follow Fraser, and later, Thompson rivers. Rivers very full and fast flowing from snow melt. River at highest our guide has seen. First travel through farm lands. Very lush and lots of cows. Great views from train. Next into canyons high above river which is swirling heavily below. Many bridges and some tunnels. After canyons, leave Fraser river and start to follow Thompson. Now very dry looking country with huge white cliffs bounding the river. Eventually reach  Kamloops lake which is huge - 42 kms long. Thompson river continues after lake all the way into Kamloops where we arrive around 7:00.

Train trip included much “watering” and feeding. Breakfast at 8:30. Dining room downstairs in carriage. Small so 2 sittings. First drinks service at 11:00 and virtually continuous for rest of day. Lunch at 12:00. Rest of day punctuated with delivery of snacks which finished just before arrival.

Check into hotel and go for walk around Kamloops. Not dark here until 9:30 - 10:00. Nice neat town with pleasant riverside park. Needless to say, no dinner required. Early bed as 6:15 start tomorrow.
